عني المؤرخ الكبير «عبد الرحمن الرافعي» بأن يسجل بين دفتي هذا الكتاب، بأسلوب تاريخي مشوق، مجمل الوقائع والأحداث التي شهدتها مصر على مر عصورها التاريخية القديمة التي امتدت لآلاف السنين، منذ بداية حكم الأسرات الملكية في مصر القديمة حتى الفتح العربي للبلاد. ولم يكن غرض المؤلف هنا هو الحديث فقط عن تاريخ مصر وحكامها، بقدر ما أراد إبراز تاريخ الحركة القومية فيها، والجهود الجليلة التي بذلها الشعب المصري من أجل رفعة شأن أمته، وتأسيس دولة حرة مستقلة تستند إلى دعائم قوية لا تهتز عبر الأزمان؛ فقد كان المصريون مستعدين دائما للثورة على كل من تسول له نفسه المساس بأمن البلاد واحتلالها والتمتع بخيراتها، وقاوموا بكل ما أوتوا من قوة، مهما كلفهم ذلك من متاعب، ومهما لاقوا من مصاعب وأهوال.
