وهو من أبرز الكتب المؤسسة لنظرية الفلسفة، حيث يبتكر لنا المؤلف أسطورة السلطة المطلقة ويوضح ركائز التقليد السياسي الحديث واللفياثان هو كائن بحري خرافي له رأس تنين وجسد أفعى ويرد ذكره مرات عدة في الكتاب المقدس، أما هوبز فيستعمله ليصور سلطة الحاكم أو الدولة التي يستبدل بها الناس ضمن عقد اجتماعي جديد سلطة الدين أو اللاهوت. وقسم هوبز الكتاب إلى أربعة أقسام، وتحدى فيه سلطة الكنيسة والدين البابوي، ويحدثنا في الجزء الأول عن الانسان، وعن أهمية اللغة والحكمة وكيفية التفكير معطيا أول التلميحات لنظرية المثالية، ثم ينتقل بعد ذلك للدولة المثالية، عبر ترميزها في اللفياثان، ويوضح لنا رؤيته بشكل جلي.
