يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن رحلة إلى مصر حيث فرضت مصر شأنها شأن باقي بلدان الشرق لا بل أكثر منها جميعا سطوتها على خيال غوتييه قبل رحلته إليها بعقود كثيرة وأثناء الرحلة وفي أعقابها كتب عنها وشعر بشوق عارم إليها قبل أن تطأها قدماه وذلك من خلال ما شاهده من إبداع أبنائها في المعرض الدولي الذي أقيم في باريس سنة 1867 والكتاب يقدم للقارئ تعويضا آخر بفضل ما يحويه ملحقه من مقالات عن أعمال أدبية وفنية مكرسة لمصر كان غوتييه قد كتبها في فترات مختلفة.
