يروي جرجي زيدان في هذه الرواية وقائع تاريخية حدثت في الأندلس في عهد ولاية عبد الرحمن الناصر، ويتخلل ذكر هذه الوقائع وصف لبلاد الأندلس وللحضارة التي أقامتها ولعادات وتقاليد أهلها في ذلك زمن ويحاول زيدان في الرواية أن يطل بالقارئ علي مشهد بانورامي لذلك العصر فيصف القصور الفخمة الطريقة التي يستقبل بها وفود ملوك أوروبا بالهدايا، وغير ذلك من مشاهد مفصلة تجعل الماضي حيا في ذهن القارئ.
