من خلال عوالم هذه العوائل يقدم لنا صورة للشريحة الدنيا من الطبقة الوسطى في برتغال الخمسينات تحت ظل ديكتاتورية سالازار، ففي هذا البيت المكون من ثلاثة طوابق وفي كل طابق شقتان، تدور كل أحداث الرواية. بالطابق الأول شقة الإسكافي (الفيلسوف) وزوجته الطيبة ثم المستأجر الشاب، الحالم واللامنتمي الذي يقطع أي رباط يخشى من أن يقيده، هذا الشاب الذي يدخل حياتهم عبر استئجار غرفة في شقتهم ومن خلال النقاشات العميقة التي تدور بين الإسكافي والشاب نطلع على الكثير من تفاصيل محنة الحياة في تلك الفترة (أحداث الرواية تدور عام 1952 تحديدا)
