يتحدث الكتاب عن اثنتا عشرة سنة من الاستعباد حيث من النادر أن نجد عنصرا نسويا بين الرحالين الغربيين إلى العالم العربي مشرقا ومغربا وإذا ما استثنينا بضعة أسماء من الغربيات اللواتي توجهن إلى المشرق العربي لا سيما البريطانيات ممن زرن الشرق في القرن التاسع عشر فإن اللواتي ظهرن في المغرب كن غالبا من الأسيرات ومن كتبن شهادات عن أسرهن هن ندرة نادرة من بين هؤلاء صاحبة هذه المذكرات الهولندية مارية تير ميتلن التي وقعت أسيرة على يد القراصنة المغاربة وتركت لنا نصا رحليا هاما عن الحياة اليومية في مغرب أواسط القرن الثامن عشر وما عرفته السنوات التي قضتها هناك من أحداث سياسية واقتصادية واجتماعية متقلبة وصادمة.
