يتحدث هذا الكتاب قصة فيلم أمريكي تم إنتاجه سنة 1956 يثان إدواردز الذي يقوم بدوره الممثل جون وين وهو من المحاربين القدامى في الحرب الأهلية الأمريكية وهو وحيد وليست لدية عائلة وبعد غياب سنوات عديدة يعود إلى بيت شقيقه ثم بعد أيام قلائل يقتل أفراد عائلة أخيه في هجوم شنته جماعة كومانتش الهنود وتختطف ابنتا أخيه ابن شقيق إيثان يقرر الذهاب والبحث عن اختيه وكذلك ابن اخيه المتبنى مارتن بولي ويلعب دوره جيفري هنتر الذي يساعدهم أيضا في البحث وفي رحلة البحث لإنقاذ ابنه أخيه يقوم إيثان جورا بقتل كل الهنود الذين شاركوا أيضا في أعمال إجرامية وبعد خمسة سنوات طويلة من مطاردة هنود الكومانتش ينجح إيثان برفقة ابن اخيه مارتن في استعادة ابنة اخيه ديبي التي لعبت دورها الممثلة ناتالي وود.
