يشتمل الكتاب إضافة إلى مقدمتيه على خمسة فصول ؛ أولها : نونه ب استحداث التقاليد وهو مصطلح وظفه المؤرخ إريك هوبزباوم، في الفصل الثاني : عن قضية أسلمة الحداثة، تناول الفصل الثالث : موضوع تسامي الحداثة وتصريف التقاليد، الفصل الرابع : فتطرق إلى إشكالية تحديث الإسلام التي سبق أن تناولها علال الفاسي بهذا المسمى من خلال بدايات محتشمة، أما الفصل الخامس : الإسلام بين الاقتداء والتقليد أو أشكال السلفيات.
