إن كتاب \"شعرية الدراما المعاصرة\" هو في الأساس مساهمة متواضعة تهدف إلى تقديم صورة مقتضبة عن أوضاع المسرح الحديث والمعاصر الذي هو في أغلب أشكاله نتاج تمرد ضد الجمالية المحاكاتية الأرسطية التي اعتمدها المسرح الدرامي، وإذا كان مسرح نهاية القرن التاسع عشر قد أعلن هذا التمرد على يد الرومانسية التي تمردت ضد وحدة الزمان والمكان والفصل بين الأجناس (تراجيديا-كوميديا) الذي أدى إلى بروز دراما الغروتيسك، وبعدها الرمزية التي دعت إلى اجياد مسرح لا مرئي يكون متناغما مع الصور الداخلية والحالة الحلمية، فإن التمرد الحقيقي هو الذي أعلن عنه أنطونان آرطو حينما وضع أسس شعريته عن \"مسرح القسوة\" الذي يرتكز على ثقافة عضوية ويتواصل فيه الإنسان مع الكون في شموليته. لذلك كان أول ما رفضه هو النص.
