هذا الكتاب فحص منهجي ومنطقي عن التمثيل عند أبي الوليد بن رشد من جهة، كما كان أداة مسخرة للنظر بين الفلسفي والعلمي من جهة ثانية فبما أن الرجل كان قد خصص أعمالا للنظر في أوجه القول، كما خصص أخرى لمعالجة مسائل فلسفية وعلمية مختلفة، لابد أن يكون قد فحص التمثيل (وما يدخل في شبكته الدلالية) بما هو وجه من وجوه القول، كما يفترض أن يحضر التمثيل كأداة يعملها القول والنظر في تلك المسائل الفلسفية والعلمية، ويفترض أيضا أن يكون لجدية النظر في التمثيل موضوعا انعكاسا على طبيعة استعماله أداة.
