بدأ الكاتب حديثه في الكتاب عن الكلاسيكية الغربية موضحا نشأتها وسماتها وكيف كان للبعثات والترجمة آثار عظيمة في نشأتها في أدبنا العربي ثم وضح أثرها في جماعة الإحياء والبعث ثم تحدث الباحث عن النزعة الرومانسية وأسباب التحول إليها وكيف ظهرت الرومانسية في أدبنا بأصول نشأتها في أحضان الإحياء والبعث ثم انفصالها لتشكل نزعة مستقلة على أيدي العربي مرروا بالديوان وأبولو والمهجر وقد تحدث الكتاب عن الموقف الأدبي في ظل الرومانسية ووضح أثره في البناء الفني للقصيدة من حيث اللغة والصورة والموسيقى الداخلية والخارجية موضحا كيف تحول الموقف الشعري في الشكل والمضمون في بناء القصيدة العربية.
