حاول الكتاب أن يقدم إضاءات توثيقية لمسيرة السينما العراقية التي تعد واحدة من السينمات المهمة عربيا وعالميا، وبعضها حقق نجاحات فنية وحصد العديد من الجوائز العربية والعالمية، حسبما أشار المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه الذي جمع فيه كل ما كتبه عن السينما العراقية من مقالات في الصحف والمجلات العراقية والعربية مؤكدا انه أرادها أن تكون مرجعا ودليلا لهذه السينما وتأريخها ورجالاتها وكل ما يتعلق بها في وقت لم يظهر أي كتاب يؤرخ لهذه السينما التي بدأت صناعتها في منتصف الأربعينات من القرن الماضي وقدمت حتى الآن أكثر من 100 فيلم روائي، فضلا عن مئات الأفلام التسجيلية والوثائقي وتأتي أهمية هذا الكتاب حسبما أكد مهدي عباس لملء فراغ كبير في الكتابة عن السينما العراقية، ولعدم وجود مصادر واسعة وعديدة وكبيرة يرجع اليها الباحث والمتابع والمهتم.
