قسم المؤلف عنوان الكتاب على قسمين : مدخل إلى علم اللغة-مناهج البحث اللغوي، كما يتضح ذلك أيضا من تقسيمات فهرس الموضوعات ، فسمى القسم الأول : المدخل إلى علم اللغة، وقسمه على سبعة فصول، ثم انتقل إلى القسم الثاني : مناهج البحث اللغوي وتطبيقات المنهج المقارن، وقسمه على ثمانية فصول، وفيما يخص الأصوات يفتتح الدكتور فصول القسم الأول بفصله الأول بـ (الدراسة الصوتية) ولن نفصل هنا التقسيمات فقد ألحقنا صورا لفهرس الموضوعات تبين التقسيمات كاملة، كما خصص المؤلف في القسم الثاني من الكتاب فصلا عنونه بـ (في أصوات اللغة) وهو الفصل الثاني من القسم الثاني.
