يضع غوستاف لوبون في هذا الكتاب تصنيفا للجماعات وفقا لأحوالها النفسية والاجتماعية والعقدية والدينية، موضحا الدور الذي تلعبه الأخلاق والمشاعر في صياغة المعتقدات التي تقود حركة التاريخ ويسلك الكاتب مسلكا يرتكز على القواعد العلمية دون الالتفات إلى الآراء والمذاهب المتحيزة ويتناول السمات العامة للجماعات وقانون وحدتها الفكرية والنفسية ومدى تأثير الأعراف والتقاليد على توجهاتها لأن التقاليد تقوم في جوهرها على فكرة الحشد أي توحيد كافة التيارات الفكرية والقوى الحركية التي تتألف منها الجماعة في اتجاه واحد ويوضح الكاتب أيضا مدى تأثر الجماعات بالرموز والعلامات التي تسهم في توجه هذه الجماعات نحو فكرة معينة.
