يتحدث الكتاب عن علم اللغة التطبيقي حيث هناك العديد من الأشخاص المهتمين باللغة دون الارتباط بدراسة أكاديمية، وقد يدرك مثل هؤلاء الأشخاص أهمية فهم اللغة لإنجاز حاجاتهم الخاصة أو لأغراض عملية خاصة بهم، أو حتى يدركوا ببساطة أشياء تعد مركزية وجوهرية في حياتهم اليومية، فإذا كان علم اللغة قد كشف أشياء متعلقة باللغة فلا بد أن تكون ميسورة للأشخاص الآخرين من غير علماء اللغة، لذا فهذا الكتاب يهدف إلى أن يكون مقدمات للغة بشكل أكثر عمومية ولعلم اللغة بوصفها علما، ويقع الكتاب في أربعة أبواب ينتهي الباب الأخير منها بكشاف لموضوعات الكتاب.
