تدور أحداث رواية (أنطونيو الجميل) في مدينة كتانيا الصقلية، المدينة التي تبدو فاشية حتى النخاع، حيث لا صوت يعلو على صوت إثبات الرجل فحولته عمليا مع المرأة. يتحول أنطونيو الذي كان الشاب الجميل، الذي طالما كان محطا لوله النساء، وحسد الرجال، وطالما رويت عنه حكايات الغرام ؛ فريسة لنظرة المجتمع المنتقدة بلا هوادة، بعد أن يكتشف عجزه الجنسي. وهكذا تصبح أيضا عائلته التي تستقبل تصريح والد الزوجة باربرا، بأن ابنته ظلت عذراء كما خرجت من منزله، وطلبه اعتبار الزواج كأنه لم يكن ككارثة حقيقية. ليأتي إذعان الزوجة لرغبة أسرتها، وزواجها بعد الطلاق بآخر أكثر ثراء ونفوذا، ليزيد من أزمة أنطونيو.
