Overview
كلمة بوذا ليست اسما لعلم. ولكنها في الأصل تعني الحكيم، ثم أصبحت تطلق علما على جوتاما سدارتا صاحب المذهب البوذي. وثمة خلافات كبيرة بين المؤرخين حول تاريخ ميلاد بوذا، والبلد الذي عاش فيه، ولكن يبدو أن أقرب الآراء للصحة هو أنه ولد سنة 623ق.م لرئيس قبيلة من القبائل التي كانت تعيش في جبال الهملايا. وتقول الأساطير إن بوذا يدرس الديانة والفلسفة الهندوكيتين، ولكنه لم يعجب بهما، فانسحب من الحياة العامة، لكي يدرس ويتأمل، إلى أن وصل أعلى مراتب المعرفة، وبدأ ينتقد الديانة الهندوكية، ويدعو إلى الديانة الجديدة، وقوبل بصعوبات كبيرة. واستمر جوتاما بوذا في نشر مذهبه والدفاع عنه طيلة خمسة وأربعين عاما.
