كتاب الهوامل والشوامل فى الحقيقة كتابان لمؤلفين كبيرين : أسئلة من أبى حيان التوحيدى سماها \"الهوامل\" وأجوبة من مسكويه سماها \"الشوامل\" ومعنى \"الهوامل\" الإبل السائمة يهملها صاحبها ويتركها ترعى و\"الشوامل\" الحيوانت التى تضبط الإبل فتجمعها. وقد استعار أبو حيان كلمة الهوامل لأسئلته المبعثرة التى تنتظر الجواب، واستعمل مسكويه كلمة الشوامل فى الإجابات التى أجاب بها فضبطت هوامل أبى حيان يدل كتاب الهوامل على أن أبا حيان شخصية فلسفية طلعة تستخلص الأسئلة من كل ما يقع أمامها سواء كانت المسائل خلقية أو اجتماعية أو لغوية أو اقتصادية أو نفسية. كما يدل الكتاب على أن أبا حيان كان واسع الأفق متعدد النواحى وهو فى ذلك يفضل مسكويه. كان مسكويه أضيق منه أفقا كما كان أسوأ منه تعبيرا. وأسلوب التوحيدى فى أسئلته أسلوب أدبى فنى رائع يمتاز حتى عن أسلوب مسكويه الفلسفى الذى يحوطه الغموض. إذ كان أبو حيان فيلسوفا مع الفلاسفة، ومتكلما مع المتكلمين، ولغويا مع اللغويين، ومتصوفا مع المتصوفين.. يتسع أفقه حتى يشمل البحث فى ذات الله وصفاته.
