احتلت مشكلة التراث والحداثة مكانا بارزا في الفكر العربي المعاصر، خصوصا في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، حيث سجلت نكبة 1967م بداية أزمة فكرية كبيرة على التيار الفكري الذي كان سائدا آنذاك، وهو التيار القومي التقدمي الاشتراكي، ذلك أن نكبة 1967م لم تكن هزيمة عسكرية فقط بل كانت هزيمة تجربة نهضوية بكاملها، فأدت النتائج السياسية التي ترتبت عنها إلى اختراق المشروع القومي التحديثي، وشكل التراث وظيفة نفسية مثلت بعدا قومي وحافزاللتحرر من ذل الهزيمة القومية والاندفاع في دروب الحياة من جديد، فبعد الهزيمة لم يبق لتجاوزها إلا العودة إلى إحياء التراث والتمسك به، باعتباره الفرصة الوحيدة التي ترمز إلى حضارة سابقة، وتعطي الإيمان بشرف الوجود ضمن الفاعلية الإنسانية والمشاركة التاريخية.
