الأنهار لم يكن وجودها على الأرض مرة واحدة بل مرت بمراحل تطور استمرت ملايين السنين حتى استقرت على ما هي عليه وقد كان للتغيرات المناخية التي شهدتها الكرة الأرضية بمرور الزمن الأثر الكبير على الأنهار فقد تأثرت بالحركات الإلتوائية والتكتونية والعصور المطيرة، والتي كان لها الدور الفاعل في رسم الصورة الحالية لتلك الإنهاروإلا كيف استطاعت أن تشق مجراها الحالي وبمسافات تصل إلى آلاف الكيلومترات عبر الجبال والهضاب والسهول وعبر طبقات وتراكيب جيولوجية مختلفة ويتركز على طول قناة الأنهار النشاط البشري بكل أنواعه، العمراني والزراعي والصناعي ورغم ما تتعرض له الكثير من المناطق لخطر الفيضان إلا أنها لن تحول دون استمرار ممارسة الأنشطة قرب النهر وقد ضم الكتاب تسعة فصول تضمنت الفقرات الأساسية المتعلقة بدراسة كل ماله علاقة بعناصر وخصائص الأنهار.
