يفترض الشيك وجود عدة علاقات بين المتعاملين به فتوجد علاقة مصدرها الاتفاق بين الساحب والبنك المسحوب عليه تجعل الأول دائنا للثاني بما يعطيه الحق في إصدار أمر بالدفع لمصلحة شخص ثالث هو المستفيد أو الحامل القانوني للشيك وتنفيذ هذا الأمر من جانب البنك المسحوب عليه يقتضي إنقاص الرصيد الدائن للساحب بمقدار قيمة الشيك وإعطاء المستفيد أو الحامل القانوني حق التصرف في هذه القيمة، وبذلك تتم عملية الوفاء بالشيك وهكذا يلتزم البنك المسحوب عليه الشيك بدفع قيمته عند تقديمه إليه للمطالبة بالأداء كونه أداة وفاء يستحق الدفع بمجرد الإطلاع.
