كانت البداية نتيجة للكبرياء الزائف والسياسة الخرقاء والطموح الناشئ عن الثقة الزائدة بالنفس، وهي النتيجة التي أدت إلى اندلاع الحرب بين بروسيا وفرنسا في الثلث الأخير من القرن التاسع عشر، وأدت بعد ذلك إلى حرب شاملة بدأت أولا بين بروسيا وفرنسا وانتهت بهزيمة فرنسا وضم إقليم الألزاس واللورين إلى بروسيا من هنا ولدت ألمانيا القوية بالتزامن مع بداية الضعف الفرنسي، كانت حربا بشعة وشاملة غيرت خريطة أوروبا وأودت بحياة ملايين من البشر عسكريين ومدنيين ودمرت مدنا ومناطق بأسرها وصار العالم بعد الحرب غير ما كان عليه قبلها، يعد الكتاب كتابا مثيرا يؤرخ الفترة المفصلية في تاريخ العالم بالكلمة والصورة أكثر من 800 صورة ويبين مدى بشاعة الحرب وتأثيرها على بني البشر.
