يتناول هذا الكتاب خلال الفترة الممتدة من سنة (280-298 هـ / 893-911 م) وقد قامت هذه الدولة بدور هام في تاريخ اليمن في أوائل العصر الإسلامي وحافظت على كيانها أكثر من ألف سنة وقد قسم المؤلف هذا الكتاب إلى أربعة فصول تناول الفصل الأول الأوضاع السياسية في بلاد اليمن قبيل قيام الدولة الزيدية. خصص الفصل الثاني لدراسة ظهور دولة بنى الرسى في صعدة. وأفرد الفصل الثالث لدراسة موقف القوى الإسلامية من قيام الدولة الزيدية. فتناول موقف الخلافة العباسية من الدولة الزيدية. وتناول الفصل الرابع دراسة المذهب الزيدي في اليمن وموقف الفرق الدينية منه.
