يحتوي هذا الكتاب الممتع للرحالة النمساوي بوركهارت على ما دونه في رحلته الحجازية، وهي ثالث رحلاته الكبرى، بعد رحلات في سوريا والأراضي المقدسة، ورحلة إلى بلاد النوبة، وقد دون بوركهارت يومياته في القاهرة بعد عودته من الحجاز، وفرغ منها بتاريخ 20 فبراير 1817، ولم تنشر إلا في سنة 1829 ؛ يحتوي هذا الكتاب على وصف مكة بمسجدها الحرام وأحيائها ووصف العديد من الأماكن المقدسة التي يزورها الحجاج وعلى ملاحظات بشأن سكان مكة وجدة وحكومتهما والمناخ والأمراض في مكة ووصف المدينة المنورة ويختتم الكتاب بوصف الرحلة من المدينة إلى ينبع ومنها إلى القاهرة بوركهارت هو أول رحالة أوربي تمكن من دخول الديار المقدسة في الحجاز بوصفه مسلما.
