عاش بطل العالم للشطرنج ألكسندر آليخين-وهو روسي وحاصل على الجنسية الفرنسية-حياته مثل مبارياته متنقلا من فوز إلى فوز ومن قارة إلى قارة، ولكن في عام 1939، وتحديدا عندما كان آليخين في مدينة بوينس آيرس، تندلع الحرب فتغير مجرى حياته، يعود آليخين إلى باريس وهناك يشاهد انهيار وطنه بالتبني، فرنسا، ووقوعها تحت الاحتلال الألماني، ويصبح آليخين رهينة وملكا لأسياد أوروبا الجدد وهم الألمان النازيون الذين ينتهزون الفرصة لاستغلال شهرته كبطل العالم في الشطرنج، يتعاون آليخين مع هانز فرانك وجوزيف جوبلز (وزراء النظان النازي) ويشارك في مسابقات مقامة في الرايخ، هكذا يتحول من لاعب شطرنج إلى قطعة شطرنج يتم التلاعب بها، شيئا فشيئا بدأ يخسر القطع الرئيسية لديه : زوجته جريس، وأصدقاءه وأفضل منافسيه، عقب انتهاء الحرب يلجأ آليخين إلى البرتغال، ويعيش وحيدا كأنه يلعب بمفرده ضد الجميع، هناك، يلعب البطل الذي لا يقهر آخر مباراة في حياته، هي قصة عن الشطرنج، ولكن الأهم، عن كيف تكون ذاتك.
