يهدف هذا البحث إلى تحديد الأبعاد الثقافية والأيديولوجية للصناعة المعجمية العربية ؛ وذلك من خلال النظر في القرارات المؤثرة في عملية تأليف المعاجم سواء على مستوى الجمع أو الوضع، ومن ثم فهو يدافع عن أطروحة أساسية مؤداها أن المعاجم يمكن أن تستثمر لتحقيق أهداف خارج نطاق الوصف الموضوعي للغة على غرار الأهداف الثقافية والأيديولوجية ؛ ذلك أن بعد الألفاظ والمعلومات والحقائق الواردة في عدد من المعاجم كانت خاضعة للرقابة ومحكومة بأيديولوجية مؤلفيها، ما جعلها لا تصف اللغة كما هي في الحقيقة، وإنما تصفها وفق المنظور الذي يريده مؤلف المعجم.
