قدم الكتاب سردا لحوادث وأخبار تاريخية شهدتها سوريا في الربع الأول من القرن العشرين، موضحا العلاقة بين السوريين والعثمانيين، وتاريخ الصراع مع الفرنسيين، وأوائل عهد الاستقلال. يستهدف المؤلف الجيل الجديد ليعرفهم بواقع الحياة في دمشق خلال تلك الفترات، حيث كان عدد السكان في العشرينات لا يتجاوز 200 ألف نسمة، مع غياب الجامعات ووجود كليات محدودة. يبرز الكتاب أيضا تطور التعليم في الأربعينات مع تأسيس الجامعة السورية، ويعتمد في سرد بعض الوقائع على مذكرات الحاج عمر المالكي، مما يعكس أهمية التاريخ في فهم الحاضر.
