هذا الكتاب يوفر إطلالة واسعة على شعر تشارلز سيميك، مع تركيز خاص على شعره المتأخر، وقد رتبت القصائد بالتدرج من أقدمها إلى أحدثها. وأقدم المجموعات الممثلة هنا، التي تحمل عنوان (قصائد جديدة ومختارة)، صدرت سنة 2013 وهي تضم، كما يدل اسمها، قصائد انتخبها سيميك من كتبه الشعرية السابقة. وأحدث تلك المجموعات، لا أرى اليابسة، صدرت سنة 2022، أي قبل أشهر من وفاته. ولهذا سيجد القارئ هنا مختارات من قصائد الشاعر في مراحل مختلفة من حياته الشعرية. ولعل القارئ سيلاحظ أيضا أن هذه القصائد أصبحت من جهة، تميل تدريجيا إلى القصر بالمقارنة مع القصائد المبكرة، وأنها من جهة أخرى، صارت تنحو نحو تصوير وقائع الحياة اليومية الأمريكية، بينما كانت القصائد الأولى تستمد مادتها، في الغالب من طفولة الشاعر في صربيا.
