يتحدث الكتاب عن أن الأمن الغذائي في الصين استطاعت الصين رغم ضخامة عدد سكانها وقلة الأراضي الزراعية بها باتباع السياسات الزراعية، واستخدام التكنولوجيا أن توفر الغذاء لأكثر من خمس سكان العالم، حيث أن إجمالي الأراضي الزراعية الصالحة للزراعة بها حوالي 7 % من إجمالي الأراضي الزراعية الصالحة على مستوى العالم، والصين هي إحدى المراكز الأصلية لإنتاج الأرز في العالم، وهي الرائدة في مجال الأرز الهجين، وقد بدأت وزارتي الزراعة، والعلوم والتكنولوجيا، برنامجا لبحوث الأرز على مرحلتين بمشاركة من عمال البحث الصينيين من أكثر من 20 منظمة زراعية عام 1996 م، وطبقا لخطة البحث ؛ فإن أنواع الأرز السوبر وفير الإنتاج الذي يبلغ 10,5 طن لكل هكتار، يجب أن تتطور في الوقت الذي يتم فيه تطوير نوع الأرز الهجين.
