إن هذا الكتاب هو موجز شاف مبسط عرضت بإشارة مقتضبة لنشأة النحو ودرس مدرستي البصرة والكوفة مبينا منهج كل منهما ذاكرا مصادر الدراسة عند البصريين وعارضا باقتضاب مظاهر الخلاف بين المدرستين ومقسما علماء كل مدرسة إلى طبقات ومتحدثا عن أشهرهم ذاكرا بعض آرائهم وتحدث الكتاب عن المدرسة البغدادية بينت فيه منهج هذه المدرسة وتحدث عن أشهر علمائها بعد أن قسمتهم إلى ثلاث مجموعات المجموعة الأولى أصحاب البصريين والمجموعة الثانية أصحاب الكوفيين والمجموعة الثالثة لمن جمعوا بين المدرستين.
