يشكل هذا الكتاب تناولا جديدا للتمثيل المقطعي بالنظر إلى التمثيل الصواتي المعروض في كتابي تشومسكي وهالي (1968) والكتاب يقدم مستوى جديداً في التمثيل الصواتي (مستوى ص مص: مستوى الصامت والمصوت)، وهو مستوى تتحدد بموجبه المواقع الوظيفية داخل المقطع يتناول الكتاب بالدراسة عدداً من اللغات (الإنجليزية، والتركية، والفنلندية والفرنسية والأسبانية والدنماركية) وبعض فصوله ترمي إلى تطبيق النظرية على لغة الكلاماث (وهي لغة هندية أمريكية يتكلم بها سكان اوريكون بشمال غرب الولايات المتحدة)
