يتألف الكتاب من إثني عشر فصلا موزعا على ثلاثمائة وسبعة وتسعين صفحة، ومن أهم المواضيع والإشكاليات التي تطرق إليها الكتاب بعد أن وضع القارئ في إطار أسئلته المركزية أن حاول الإجابة عن السؤال المبهم حول مفهوم العلمانية كخطوة أساسية لتجاوز التوظيفات غير الفلسفية لهذ المفهوم، كما حاول وضع الخطوط العريضة بين المعرفة الدينية والمعرفة العلمية وطبيعتها ليتطرق في فصول أخرى إلى الاختلافات بين المعرفة بالعقل والمعرفة بالوحي، ومن أهم الإشكاليات التي تطرق إليها كذلك هي العلاقة بين الدين والأخلاق، وعلاقة العلمانية بالإسلام وكذا علاقة العلمانية بالعقلانية.
