يتناول الكتاب تيار الشعوبية في أدب الجاحظ ذلك التيار الذي كان هادرا في العصر العباسي الأول على وجه الخصوص ووقف له الجاحظ على رأس الكتاب والمفكرين المدافعين عن العرب بالمرصاد يبطل حجج أنصاره وأشياعه من العناصر والأجناس المختلفة خاصة الفرس، ويهاجم أيضا الزنادقة الذين أدى بهم الإنجراف في تيار الشعوبية إلى مهواة الزندقة وهو في كل هذا يدافع عن العروبة والإسلام أمام أعدائهما من الشعوبيين والزنادقة، وقد تناول الكتاب الفصول الآتية : الفصل الأول : درست فيه مؤلفات الجاحظ التي واجه فيها الشعوبية، وفي الفصل الثاني : تناولت أنواع التيارات الشعوبية ومواجهة الجاحظ لها، وفي الفصل الثالث : درست العناصر الشعوبية واتهاماتها للعرب ورد الجاحظ عليها.
