لا شك أن أرسطو طاليس، يعد من أعظم فلاسفة الإغريق، وكانت أسرته من الأسر المرموقة في علم الطب والفلسفة، وقد أصبح علما من أعلام الفلسفة اليونانية، وامتاز بين أقرانه بما يتمتع به من ذكاء حاد، وذهن متوقد، مما حدا بالفيلسوف اليوناني أفلاطون أن يسميه \"العقل\". فهذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، من مصنفات أرسطو طاليس المتوفي سنة أربع وثمانين وثلاثمائية قبل الميلاد. وقد أعجب الفلاسفة بهذا الكتاب إعجابا كبيراًن لما فيه من المنهج القويم الذي كان أرسطو طاليس يتبعه في معظم كتبه لا سيما في كتابنا هذا، فنراه في البداية يعين موضوع بحثه، ثم يقوم بسرد الآراء بعد تمحيصها وتدقيقها، بعد ذلك يسجل المسائل المربكة والعويصة في موضوع بحثه، ثم يتناول هذه المسائل ويبدأ بعملية الوصول إلى حلول لهذه المسائل.
