بدأ هذا الكتاب كجزء من مشروع بحث مشترك بعنوان \"تخلي الدولة عن دورها، والعولمة في أفريقيا\" بين مركز الدراسات الأفريقية في لايدن ومركز دراسات أفريقيا السوداء في بوردو، مولته بسخاء وزارة الخارجية الهولندية. وقد توج المشروع بعقد مؤتمر دولي \"الإسلام وتخلي الدولة عن دورها، والعولمة في أفريقيا\" في مقر اليونسكو بباريس في 12-13 مايو / آيار 2005، قدمت خلاله الأوراق المضمنة في هذا الكتاب في صورها الأولى. وقد قدمت وزارة الخارجية الفرنسية دعما إضافيا لعقد المؤتمر.
