تدور أحداث المسرحية في مدينة قورينا الليبية (210 كلم تقريبا شرق بنغازي)، في العصر الروماني، حيث اختطفت ابنة ملك قورينا وعم الجفاف المدينة وذهب الجيش في حرب بعيدة وخيم الحزن والحداد على مدينة قورينا، إلى أن ظهرت في ساحة قورينا في يوم إعلان الحداد المنتظم في يوم معين كل عام والذي يعد موسما مربحا لكاهن المدينة، فتاة صغيرة تبيع الزهور. بائعة الزهور من خلال بيعها وعرضها للزهور في الساحة غيرت من أجواء الحداد وانقلب حال الناس إلى الفرح والبهجة، ثم تصاعدت وتيرة الدراما على الطريقة الرومانية والإغريقية وما تميزت به من فنون خطابة وفلسفة ومنطق بين بائعة الزهور ومن احتفل معها بالفرح وبين الطرف الآخر الذي اعتبر اقتحام الزهور لأجواء الحداد خطيئة عقابها الموت. يتواصل الحوار الذي تتصارع فيه قوى الخير بزهورها وجمالها مع قوى الشر بنارها ودمها ورمادها، ليحسم الصراع في النهاية النور ولتهزم الكراهية لتنتصر المحبة.
