تعد رواية \"أولاد حارتنا\" من أكثر الروايات إثارة للجدل في الأدب المعاصر فقد اتخذت طابعا رمزيا وصفه معظم النقاد بالمتطرف لأنه طال الذات الإلهية كما تعد الرواية من أهم الأعمال التي ساهمت في حصول نجيب محفوظ على جائزة نوبل للآداب عام 1988م حيث تم الإشارة إليها عند منحه الجائزة وتدور أحداث الرواية في الحارة والتي يكون الجبلاوي هو أصلها وصاحب الشروط العشر فيها ولسبب لا نعلمه يفضل أدهم على إدريس فيتمرد إدريس ويطرده الجبلاوي من كرامته ولكنه يستطيع إغواء أدهم بإثارة شوقه للمعرفة بتحريض من زوجته فيطردهما الجبلاوي باكيين نادمين وينجبا قدري الذي يقتل فيما بعد أخاه همام.
