تتمثل أهمية هذا الكتاب في كونه أول محاولات (النقد الجديد) في قراءة النصوص الشعرية قراءة مدققة وثيقة وانتهى الكتاب إلى أن الإبهام صفه ملازمه للخطاب الشعرى وذلك لما يشتمل عليه من ازدواج لفظي دلالي لا شعوري أو محسوب ويستفيد مؤلف الكتاب من التحليل النفسي الفرويدي ومن النظرية الماركسية ومن أنساق معرفية أخرى ولكنه ظل محللا لفظيا يسلط على كلمات الشاعر أضواء ساطعة من علمه باللغة الإنجليزية وتاريخها عبر القرون.
