Bowles is back: A guru receives homage in Atlanta
1994
THE Paul Bowles mystique doesn't touch everyone, but it has a long reach. America's most eminent expatriate writer and resident of Tangier brought his mystique with him on his first visit to the United States in nearly 30 years. He went to Atlanta in mid-May to receive a medical checkup. He agreed to revisit the country where he was born in 1910 on the condition that he bypass New York. \"I used to love it. It was a wonderful city in the 20's,\" he said. The first enthusiast to make the pilgrimage to Georgia, the \"Empire State of the South,\" to pay his respects was Daniel Halpern, co-founder with Mr. Bowles of Antaeus magazine and the Ecco Press. The composer Ben Yarmolinsky followed soon after. Millicent Dillon, biographer of both Paul and Jane Bowles, flew in from San Francisco. Then Regina Weinreich, who has written about the Beat Generation, arrived and showed her documentary film, \"Paul Bowles: The Complete Outsider.\"
