Consumption of aflatoxin‐contaminated food is responsible for hepatotoxicity. Dichrocephala integrifolia ( D. integrifolia ) is used in traditional African medicine to treat various liver diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of aqueous leaf extract of D. integrifolia on aflatoxin‐containing peanut‐induced liver damage in Wistar rats. The animals were fed the standard diet (SD) or the SD supplemented with stored and poorly preserved peanuts (50:50) containing aflatoxins for 42 days. Then, animals received the diet concomitantly with D. integrifolia (100, 200 mg/kg), or Silybon 100 mg/kg for 14 days. At the end of the experimental period, biochemical markers, including the lipid profile, liver function markers, and proinflammatory markers, were evaluated. A histopathological analysis of the liver was performed. Semiquantitative evaluation of aflatoxin B1 in peanuts by thin‐layer chromatography was carried out, and phytochemical characterization of the extract by high‐performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry was performed. As a result, poorly stored peanuts contain 20 μg/kg aflatoxin B1/kg of peanuts. Consumption of contaminated peanuts resulted in inflammation characterized by a significant increase ( p < 0.001) in proinflammatory cytokines (TNF‐α, INF‐γ, and IL‐13) and a significant increase ( p < 0.001) in transaminase activities, GGT, ALP, and levels of total bilirubin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and a significant decrease ( p < 0.001) in HDL cholesterol and albumin levels. These various abnormalities were accompanied by a significant increase ( p < 0.001) in oxidative stress. These disturbances were confirmed by hepatic cytolysis, leukocyte infiltration, and vascular congestion. Treatment with D. integrifolia extract at all doses tested reversed these abnormalities. These beneficial effects of the extract could be due to β ‐amyrin formate, identified in this extract, and could therefore justify the use of this plant extract in traditional medicine to manage liver diseases.

Phytoestrogens are used to ease postmenopausal symptoms, a property probably due to estrogenic and antioxidant effects. Pterocarpus soyauxii (P. soyauxii) is empirically used in Cameroon to treat among others primary and secondary amenorrhea. The aim of this study is to evaluate estrogenic and antioxidant activities of P. soyauxii heartwood aqueous extract in bilateral oophorectomized Wistar rats. Firstly, a characterization of the extract was carried out. For that, flavonoids, phenols, and tannins levels in P. soyauxii extract were evaluated by colorimetric assays and UHPLC-MS analysis was realized. In vitro antioxidant analysis of P. soyauxii was conducted using DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays. Secondly, 2 sets of pharmacologic tests were carried out. The results revealed that P. soyauxii aqueous extract contains, respectively, 229.42 ± 3.62 mg EAG/g, 63.42 ± 2.16 mg EQ/g, and 27.88 ± 0.23 mg ETA/g of polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins. UHPLC-MS enabled identifying seven components including mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, cembrene, 3′,5′-dimethoxy-4-stilbenol, and linoleic acid. DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays revealed that P. soyauxii extract possessed a high antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 730.20 µg/mL, 892.90 µg/mL, and 765.75 mEAG/g of extract, respectively. In the uterotrophic assay, P. soyauxii extract induced significant increase of fresh uterine weight, uterine and vaginal epithelial size, and mammary glands differentiation compared to Ovx control. In the postmenopausal model, compared to the sham control, vagina and uterine dystrophies were observed in Ovx rats treated with distilled water. P. soyauxii aqueous extract expressed estrogenic-like effects on vagina and did not affect uterine epithelial height compared with vehicle groups. On the back of these vaginotrophic effects, the extract displayed antiatherogenic properties by reducing (p < 0.001) AI and LDL cholesterol level as compared to Ovx control group. The extract at 200 mg/kg significantly prevented the increase of MDA (p < 0.01) level and decreased nitrites (p < 0.001) and GSH (p < 0.01) levels compared to Ovx rats. These beneficial effects are related at least in part to the presence of compound such as mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, 3′,5′-dimethoxy-4-stilbenol, and linoleic acid. Overall, P. soyauxii aqueous extract exhibits estrogenic and antioxidant effects which can inhibit postmenopausal symptoms by providing vaginal stratification, improving lipid profile and insulin sensitivity, and reducing oxidative stress without side effects on the endometrium and mammary gland in 84-day Ovx rats.

Life at the top : New York's most exceptional apartment buildings
\"What are New York City's best apartment buildings? Before 1900, it was the Dakota and the Osborne; soon after came McKim, Mead & White's 998 Fifth and the ultra-soigne 820 Fifth Avenue. The roaring twenties produced true luxury: 740 Park Avenue, the art deco-inspired River House, and Rosario Candela's extraordinary 778 and 720 Park Avenue. Today, the city's skyline sparkles with palatial new buildings, such as Robert A. M. Stern's 15 Central Park West, Richard Meier's glass-walled Perry Street towers, and 432 Park Avenue, New York's tallest residential building. Kirk Henckels and Anne Walker, real estate and architectural insiders, chronicle the fortunes and features of 15 outstanding apartment houses with a wealth of vintage and new photography and architectural plans, and show off select apartments as they look today, designed by top interior designers\"-- Provided by publisher.

The escalating challenge of malaria management, primarily driven by antimalarial drug resistance, necessitates the urgent exploration of novel therapeutic agents. This investigation focused on characterizing the therapeutic efficacy of an aqueous stem bark extract derived from Enantia chlorantha Oliv (Annonaceae) against the parasitic burden of Plasmodium berghei in a rodent model. Comprehensive assessment revealed noteworthy in vitro antiplasmodial efficacy against both the PfDd2 and Pf3D7 strains of P. falciparum , evidenced by median inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 1.002 and 19.040 μg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the extract demonstrated a statistically significant, dose–responsive suppression of parasitemia in the in vivo model ( p < 0.001), achieving suppression rates between 79.00% and 96.91%. Critically, the administration of the extract mitigated malaria‐associated pathophysiology, including the prevention of cachexia, anemia, and elevated leukocyte counts. It concurrently facilitated the functional recovery of hepatic and renal biomarkers (e.g., transaminases, bilirubin, and creatinine), reversed indicators of cellular oxidative stress, and potentially lessened multiorgan structural damage. Collectively, these preclinical findings robustly support the substantial antimalarial capacity of E. chlorantha stem bark extract, providing scientific validation for its ethnobotanical application. Future pharmacological research is now imperative to isolate and chemically identify the specific phytochemical constituents responsible for these observed bioactivities.

Describing Protostellar Disk Structure in Ophiuchus
2022
Young forming stars host circumstellar disks of dust and gas. High-resolution, millimeter observations of disks at the protoplanetary stage reveal substructures such as gaps, rings, arcs, spirals, and cavities. These structures are often attributed to disturbances from young, newly formed planets or mechanisms conducive to planet formation. However, the formation mechanisms of the substructures are unconstrained, and only a few disks at the younger protostellar stage have known substructures to date. In this thesis, we present a detailed analysis of 1.3 and 0.87 mm observations of ten protostellar disks in the Ophiuchus star-forming region in a search for the origins of the substructure. Of the sample of ten, four disks have identified structure, three are smooth disks, and three are ambiguous. The structured disks have wide Gaussian-like rings (σR/Rdisk ∼ 0.26) above a smooth disk profile with low contrasts (C < 0.2) in comparison to protoplanetary disks where the rings are narrow and have a wide variety of contrasts (σR/Rdisk ∼ 0.08 and C ranges from 0 − 1). These structured protostellar disks are the brightest sources in the Ophiuchus sample, in agreement with trends observed for protoplanetary disks, and two show evidence of flaring, indicating large dust grains have not had time to fully settle onto the midplane of the disk. These observations indicate that structure in protostellar disks may be common. The presence of structure at the earliest stages suggests an early start for dust grain growth and, subsequently planet formation.
