The Sitter's Tale: John Hoyland 'You've got so many lines,' David Bailey told the eminent painter. 'I'd like to photograph your lines'
I don't know David Bailey well; I'm more of an acquaintance of his. I used to see him around, when I lived in Primrose Hill 20 years ago. He lived there too, so we would nod to each other suspiciously. In the past, David said to me a few times, I'd like to photograph you; you've got so many lines, I'd like to photograph your lines. But he never got round to it. So when we were trying out names for this portrait to coincide with my exhibition, I said, what about David Bailey? I know him a bit. He was keen to do it, so it all worked out well.
