Daniel's Dog
She had a tiny face and tiny hands. She couldn't throw a ball or play catch. She couldn't even talk. Carrie spent a lot of time lying on her back kicking her legs and a lot of time sleeping. Daniel's mother spent a lot of time taking care of Carrie. ``Are you feeling mad at me, Daniel?'' his mother asked one night as she tucked him in. ``I'm sorry I haven't been spending as much time with you lately. Things will get better soon.'' ``I'm all right,'' Daniel told her, and smiled a little. ``I'm just fine since Lucy came.''
Genetic Compatibility Experiments between Some South American Anuran Amphibians
Genetic compatibility of several species combinations of South American anurans has been tested. There is a considerable amount of incompatibility. In some instances, chromosomal differences may account for some of the observed incompatibility, but other deleterious factors are discussed. Compatibility experiments and chromosomal analysis should prove useful when used with other criteria to help delineate the evolution of some South American frog species.
Emily Carr: At the Edge of the World
The text is thoughtful, sensitive and respectful as it delineates the major influences and high points of [Emily Carr]'s life and art. As in the award-winning biography of Jackson Pollack, Action Jackson by Jan Greenberg (Millbrook, 2002), [Jo Ellen Bogart] is able to give the reader a glimpse into the creative heart of an artist and let readers know about the person in a very accessible and readable book. This biography of Carr is a perfect extension for older readers to The Art Room by Susan Vande Griek (Douglas & McIntyre, 2002). This picture book tells the story of Emily's teaching and how it transformed the young artists in her class. Upper elementary readers will also be interested in Four Pictures by Emily Carr by Nicolas Debon (Groundwood, 2003) which tells the story of Emily's life in an alternate way - through a comic strip format which focuses on four paintings expressing different periods of her life.
