In deep water with 'The Isbitza'
2001
'Living Waters-The Mei HaShiloach: A Commentary on the Torah by Rabbi Mordechai Yosef of Isbitza'. Translated and edited by Betsalel Philip Edwards. Northvale, New Jersey, Jason Aronson. 485 pages. $39.95 Thus, Betsalel Philip Edwards' translation of the The Living Waters by Rabbi Mordechai Yosef (also known as \"The Isbitza\") is a welcome addition to the English Torah library. Reb Mordechai Yosef Lainer (1800-1854) was a student of Reb Simha Bunim of Pszische and Mendel of Kotsk. \"The Isbitza\" belongs to a branch of hassidism that was renown for its intellectual prowess and erudition. This verse refers to \"the ability to expand outward.\" The Isbitza says \"There is sowing, and there is reaping. Sowing is when one first accepts upon himself the yoke of the sovereignty of heaven. At that time he must constrict himself against running after the object of his lust.\"
