Overcome Creative Buzzkills
2020
[...]sometimes criticism stops creativity cold, a psychological phenomenon that manifests as creative suppression or the more enduring creative mortification. Creative suppression occurs, says psychologist Ronald Beghetto, of Arizona State University, when creative juices stop flowing for a while-say, after an observer offers criticism or when the creator is wrestling with self-doubt. Beghetto measured its relationship with self-conscious emotions (guilt, shame, and embarrassment), self-theories of competency (seeing abilities as fixed or fluid), and the proclivity to take risks or play it safe.
