Alcohol has a strong causal relationship with sexual arousal and disinhibited sexual behavior in humans; however, the physiological support for this notion is largely lacking and thus a suitable animal model to address this issue is instrumental. We investigated the effect of ethanol on sexual behavior in Drosophila. Wild-type males typically court females but not males; however, upon daily administration of ethanol, they exhibited active intermale courtship, which represents a novel type of behavioral disinhibition. The ethanol-treated males also developed behavioral sensitization, a form of plasticity associated with addiction, since their intermale courtship activity was progressively increased with additional ethanol experience. We identified three components crucial for the ethanol-induced courtship disinhibition: the transcription factor regulating male sex behavior Fruitless, the ABC guanine/tryptophan transporter White and the neuromodulator dopamine. fruitless mutant males normally display conspicuous intermale courtship; however, their courtship activity was not enhanced under ethanol. Likewise, white males showed negligible ethanol-induced intermale courtship, which was not only reinstated but also augmented by transgenic White expression. Moreover, inhibition of dopamine neurotransmission during ethanol exposure dramatically decreased ethanol-induced intermale courtship. Chronic ethanol exposure also affected a male's sexual behavior toward females: it enhanced sexual arousal but reduced sexual performance. These findings provide novel insights into the physiological effects of ethanol on sexual behavior and behavioral plasticity.

Amazing Truth
2018
What is the magic of Alvin Ailey’s Revelations that keeps audiences filling the theater? The skill, the craft, the musicality and ultimately the spirit and the truthfulness of his choreography are examined. The body of Ailey’s work fits into three general categories: abstract evocations of music; intensely emotional dances which are responses to social issues; and choreography celebrating the gifts and personalities of specific dancers. Examples of each of these categories are explored through such works as Masekela Langage, Night Creature, and Revelations.
What is the magic of Alvin Ailey's Revelations that keeps audiences filling the theater? The skill, the craft, the musicality and ultimately the spirit and the truthfulness of his choreography are examined. Born dirt poor in rural Texas and raised by a troubled but beautiful and singularly imaginative mother, Alvin Ailey was a modern dance choreographer and company director of international renown by the time of his death, in 1989. Ailey had plunged naively into his first, literature-driven choreography for Lester Horton's modern dance company in Los Angeles, pushed by Horton's sudden death and the company's need for new choreography. Ailey began work on the piece by having his dancers move to Masekela's recorded music, at first in a dormitory lounge at Connecticut College, where, at the American Dance Festival, Masekela Langage received its premiere.

This dissertation consists of a collection of short stories, many of which foreground the relationship of character to place. A number of the stories are set in Ellisville, Ohio, a fictional town with similarities to Athens and surrounding southeast Ohio towns. The critical introduction explores the use of omniscient narration in contemporary short fiction. Drawing on the ideas of Walter Benjamin, from his essay \"The Storyteller,\" the introduction considers how the presence of the storyteller's voice in fiction might shape narrative.
