A Sustainable and Open Access Knowledge Organization Model to Preserve Cultural Heritage and Language Diversity
This paper proposes a new collaborative and inclusive model for Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) for sustaining cultural heritage and language diversity. It is based on contributions of end-users as well as scientific and scholarly communities from across borders, languages, nations, continents, and disciplines. It consists in collecting knowledge about all worldwide translations of one original work and sharing that data through a digital and interactive global knowledge map. Collected translations are processed in order to build multilingual parallel corpora for a large number of under-resourced languages as well as to highlight the transnational circulation of knowledge. Building such corpora is vital in preserving and expanding linguistic and traditional diversity. Our first experiment was conducted on the world-famous and well-traveled American novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by the American author Mark Twain. This paper reports on 10 parallel corpora that are now sentence-aligned pairs of English with Basque (an European under-resourced language), Bulgarian, Dutch, Finnish, German, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Ukrainian, processed out of 30 collected translations.

Among other things, she probes some of the synthesis and connections being made in the field of American studies today. The goal of American studies scholarship is not exporting and championing an arrogant, pro-American nationalism but understanding the multiple meanings of America and American culture in all their complexity.

TRANSNATIONAL AMERICAN LITERARY STUDIES IN THE TIME OF TRUMP
In Figueroa's view, Mir's efforts to both celebrate and transcend Whitman's rhetoric with his own \"countersong\" may be seen, in part, as an effort to \"re-imagine aspects of the Dominican Republic's convoluted historical relations with the 'colossus of the north'\"-exemplified by \"the U.S. occupation from 1916 to 1925, an uneasy cold war/good neighbor alliance during much of Trujillo's regime, another occupation in 1965, and armed and political resistance\" (59). For Mir, the liberating vision of the writer widely viewed as the \"poet of democracy\" has been occluded by the forces of global capitalism: the bank vaults of Wall Street and the military power that protects them (the reefs of bayonets and daggers) transmute the humility and arrogance that coexist in delicate tension in Whitman's voice in \"Song of Myself\" into the blunt commands of the forces of American business interests, much as an America founded on the ideals of liberty and democracy has become (in Mir's view) a nation that puts profits before people. Only in the 1990s would American scholars generally decide that this aspect of Twain deserved their attention. [...]the publication of Jim Zwick's Mark Twain's Weapons of Satire: Anti-Imperialist Writings on the Philippine-American War in 1992, this was probably the part of Twain's literary heritage that his countrymen valued least. (Twain 1900) As Americans struggle to come to terms with the prospect of thousands of our countrymen needlessly dying because their access to health care is threatened by a majority party with a \"soul full of meanness\"; as we marvel at the greed with which politicians and corporate executives alike fill their pockets \"full of boodle\" without shame; and as we reel from the daily barage of \"pious hypocrisies\" issuing from the highest reaches of power, seeing our country through the eyes of astute foreign observers like Pedro Mir and Lao She can be instructive.
