82 portraits and 1 still-life
\"Following his sweeping exploration of landscape in 2012 at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, published in the phenomenally successful David Hockney: A Bigger Picture, this new volume looks exclusively at a new series of portraits that David Hockney, one of the most famous artists in the world, has been painting recently. In 2012, Hockney returned to California, where he had lived and worked for long periods. There followed a series of painted portraits, the subjects of which ranged from studio assistants and office staff to family, friends, and long-term acquaintances. Also included are a number of fellow artists, curators, and gallerists, including John Baldessari and Larry Gagosian. Reproduced in stunning colorplates the paintings are shown alongside revealing images of the works in various stages of development, which provide an exciting insight into Hockneys painterly process. The book is introduced with two important new texts. This vivid series of portraits, executed in bold acrylics, observant and full of life, marks Hockneys vibrant return to Technicolor form.\" -- Amazon.com

Retro tribute to David Hockney
BRITAIN'S David Hockney has joined the ranks of many Englishmen with oodles of cash - decamped to sunny California where blue skies, palm-lined avenues and swimming pools offer a real respite from draughty Albion. His presence at his retro exhibition ensured vital media publicity as nothing is more depressing than an artist missing from his own \"tribute\" exhibition. Born in Bradford in 1937, Hockney studied at the Bradford College of Art from 1953 to 1957, entering the Royal College of Art two years later. In 1959, he graduated with the prestigious Gold Medal and his first one-man exhibition took place a year later. In 1985, he was elected to the Royal Academy of Art, which explains the R.A. after his name. His cartoons and posters might have made him a graphics artist had he not discovered fine art in the nick of time. At first, his works were painstakingly \"professional\"-looking but in the early 60s, he was ready to make his mark as a modern artist by the simple process of deliberately working against the principles that had moulded his first works.
