CHILDREN'S BOOKS; IN MOTHER'S QUILT, IN FATHER'S FIELD
In addition to being a deeply moral book, ''Yonder'' is both stylish and substantial. Unlike some picture books lately - the ones with ravishing pictures and oh, yes, a text - ''Yonder'' is grounded in poetry and simply stated truths. [Tony Johnston], whose other books include ''The Quilt Story'' and ''Five Little Foxes and the Snow,'' has made every word count, and her story sings when it's read aloud. In just four lines per page, she conveys the passage of time, the values of the heartland, the beauty of the family circle and the concept of what we leave behind us when we die. The seasonal structure of the book is reminiscent of the more informational ''Year at Maple Hill Farm'' by Alice and Martin Provensen (1978), but instead of telling the story of one year, ''Yonder'' is a mood piece revealing the larger pattern of generations.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS
The traditional folk songs and unusual selection of yarns were collected by the children's book editor [Ann Durell] from various American regions and ethnic groups. The songs range from zippy (''Buffalo Gal,'' ''Yankee Doodle,'' ''Clementine,'' ''I've Been Working on the Railroad'') to melancholy (''On Top of Old Smokey,'' ''Swing Low, Sweet Chariot'') and sweet (''Billy Boy''). Ms. [DIANE GOODE] translates the pulse and mood of each into witty illustrations. The stories include the somewhat familiar (''Davy Crockett Meets His Match'' and ''Good or Bad?''), the not so familiar (''The Three Girls With the Journey-Cakes,'' ''The Talking Mule''), the humorous (''The Greedy Wife,'' ''The Twist-Mouth Family,'' ''The Knee-High Man''), the animal fable (''The Coyote and the Bear'') and the shivery ghost tale (''Wait Till Martin Comes'').
CHILDREN'S BOOKS
Mr. [Steven Kellogg]'s trilogy of retold tall American tales - ''Paul Bunyan'' (1984), ''Pecos Bill'' (1986) and now ''[JOHNNY APPLESEED Retold]'' - jumble a few inspired moments of storytelling with too many flimsy purple patches of junky, overblown fabrication. While never entirely satisfying, his images and instincts work best when he's whipping up a ruckus in the sagas of Pecos Bill and Paul Bunyan. He's least successful when trying to capture the essence of Johnny Appleseed - a more subtle, much gentler hero.
