A study of the relationship between the correlates of effective schools and aggregate Adequate Yearly Progress scores
Introduction. The clarion call of the landmark No Child left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 has penetrated every sphere of public education. Schools across the United States now have a mandate and timeline to see that all students and subgroups of students make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) by demonstrating learning gains through standardized state tests or face increasingly stiff sanctions. This calls for leaders who understand the complex interplay of the correlates of effective schools, use data-driven methods to accurately assess their school's priority needs, identify the key correlates that will bring the highest AYP return on time invested, and use precision remediation to ensure learning for all. Purpose and method of study. This study utilized a quantitative research perspective and a correlational research type. It was designed to aid educational leaders in utilizing effective school correlates with greater precision in order to meet the federally mandated AYP accountability requirements. Correlate data from the Effective Schools Correlate Survey for one mid-Florida region were available for 16 schools in 2003 and 19 schools in 2004 and 2005: 10 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools, and one alternative school. Composite data for each correlate combined with the matching AYP data for each school were used in a forward stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results and conclusions. Results appear to be in congruence with similar studies. That is, there appears to be a high correlation among correlates of effective schools, and a significant correlation appears to exist between aggregate AYP scores and three correlates: Parent and Community Involvement, Collaboration Among Staff, and Streamlining the Core Curriculum: Monitoring Student Progress.

A year in News... ...and Pictures: April 2006 – March 2007
2008
Astronomers have found that spiral galaxies are not randomly oriented in space. They appear to be preferentially aligned. The dramatic results come from a careful study of two huge galaxy surveys, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey, combined with precise locations of known voids, large spaces lacking in bright galaxies.

Astronomers Gather in Seattle... ...The 209th American Astronomical Society Meeting
2008
IT’S AMAZING!” “I’ve found it invaluable.” “Inspirational.” These are some of the comments from first timers and seasoned delegates at the 209th meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS), held from 5–10 January 2007 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, Washington. The biennial gathering was held jointly with the Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), bringing over 2,200 delegates from around the country.

A fund alternative to model portfolios
2018
Existing investment management arrangements can remain in place and an independent specialist can be appointed as the authorised corporate director (ACD), with regulatory and legal responsibility for the fund and its governance. Key Points: * As the use of model portfolios tapers, advisers are looking to operating in-house funds for clients * In-house funds come with complexities but can offer tax benefits for clients and streamline administration for advisers * Operating an in-house fund will not be suitable for all advisers but could be viable for those with over £150m in assets under advice It is also important to consider what type of assets will be held in client portfolios. The process of unitising portfolios can appear complex, but there are a number of specialist host ACD businesses to provide guidance at every step of the process, from the FCA application right through to producing all the literature required by the regulator, such as the fund’s prospectus and key investor information document (Kiid).

Robert simpson's third symphony: sources and influences
1998
Robert Simpson's Third Symphony (1961-2) marks a transition between the two stages into which the composer's oeuvre is generally divided (as one of his last works based upon major/minor keys, before his conscious composition with intervals). It is unusual within Simpson's output in three respects: it incorporates models, from Beethoven; its genesis can be traced in two manuscript autograph scores and two published versions; and the autograph scores preserve unique revisions by the composer. The issues that arise in consequence are considered in the context of general influences upon the symphony, a description of the manuscripts and published scores, and remarks about manuscript interpretation. From an analysis of the modelling of the first movement upon the first movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, a reconstruction is offered of music lost from the earliest stage of composition. This reconstruction permits the elaboration of a hypothesis with respect to an atypical feature of Simpson's style: Simpson's revisions were most far-reaching where Beethoven's influence had initially been strongest. Further Beethovenian influences are identified, with their bearing on the manner in which Simpson revised and utilized the typical features of his style which are fundamental to the Third Symphony's symphonic structure: rhythm and pace, tonality and harmony. The influence of these revisions upon Simpson's Fourth and Fifth Symphonies is also investigated. With reference to the Beethoven influences identified earlier, parallels are drawn between developments in Simpson's style, and Beethoven's between his 'second' and 'third' periods. 'Suggestion' (a process used by Simpson, of statement 'by implication', related to compositional compression in the revisions) is discussed and considered as a metaphor for the development of Simpson's style as Beethoven's influence upon him weakened. A brief comparison of Simpson's Third Symphony with his Fourth and Fifth Symphonies is also included.

April 2018: Mars and Saturn rendezvous
2018
The modest tilt shows up more clearly in the behavior of the four bright Galilean moons.Because they lie in Jupiter's equatorial plane, their orbital motions carry them farther north or south of the planet's center than usual. If you observe Mars at the same time every morning - which is almost a necessity this month with the planet best positioned just before dawn - you'll see only a slight change in what's visible on successive nights. No glowing gas clouds lie along our line of sight, just some dark dust that reduces the number of field stars.LOCATING ASTEROIDS Ceres plots a course through Cancer The largest body in the belt of objects between Mars and Jupiter is 1 Ceres.

Mars grows bright
2009
(On the 23rd, a waxing crescent Moon stands 4° above Jupiter.) Jupiter lies due south and at its highest point in the sky as evening twilight descends. [...] find the Great Square of Pegasus, which stands high in the southeast as darkness falls. Only Sirius and the Moon shine brighter between the time Jupiter sets in the evening and Venus rises before dawn. Glimpse the great ring of fire
2006
While changes in the Moon's apparent size are not noticeable with the eye, our satellite's distance from Earth varies by up to 31,000 miles (49,900 kilometors) during the course of its month-long elliptical orbit. North American observers are outside the path of the September 22 eclipse and will have to travel to South America to glimpse the great ring of fire or wait until May 20, 2012, when the next annular eclipse of the Sun passes over North America.
