يكتب الأستاذ يزن اللجمي في إحدى مقالاته عن شوستاكوفيتش: \"خلال الحرب الباردة، ظل الجدل محتدما في الغرب حول كيفية التعامل مع شوستاكوفيتش أخلاقيا وفنيا، فبينما اعتبر البعض أسلوبه رجعيا ومتأخرا بالنسبة لعصره، دافع عنه آخرون مشيرين إلى أن بطولته يصعب فهمها من قبل أولئك الذين عاشوا طوال حياتهم في مجتمعات حرة ومزدهرة.\" تقدم المتوسط هذا الكتاب للقارئ العربي الذي قد يكون الأقدر على فهم هكذا نوع من البطولات، فما أكثر من عايش، ومن لا يزال يعايش أنظمة فاقت في قمعها وجبروتها نظام ستالين.\"
